[Triangle, Va.] United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:
“The action last night by the Republicans in the Wisconsin Senate to strip a group of Americans of their long-held and hard-fought rights as working people is an affront to all that American working families have built over the last century.
“Like the robber barons and their political minions at the turn of the 20th century, the radical-right Koch brothers and their lap-dogs like Gov. Scott Walker and the GOP members of the Wisconsin Legislature have taken the position that the only way to keep working families in ‘our place’ is to strip us of our freedoms and silence our voices.
“I’ve got news for them: Your actions have only served to strengthen our resolve to fight back. And that fight has only just begun.
“At Lattimer, Ludlow, Matewan, Blair Mountain and elsewhere, members of the UMWA and our families have been the victims of the excesses of powerful elitists like the Koch brothers and their political allies. We fought back, we persevered, and we won. We stand ready to assist our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin in any way we can as they embark on their own fight to win back their rights as Americans.”
