Kentucky limestone miners win UMWA representation

April 25, 2008
For immediate release?:

A bargaining unit of 148 miners today voted for United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) representation at Carmeuse Lime Co. in Maysville, Ky.

“Today’s vote is the culmination of a very long struggle by Carmeuse workers to gain a collective voice on the job,” said UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts. “It gives me great pleasure to welcome them to our union family.”

The eastern Kentucky facility mines limestone, then uses it to manufacture lime destined for power plants in the Ohio River Valley.
