UMWA in Action
New Contract at Peabody's Highland #9 mine
September 28, 2007
For immediate release?:
The United Mine Workers of American (UMWA) has reached an agreement covering workers at the Highland No. 9 Mine near Morganfield, Ky., the last remaining Peabody Energy site not covered by the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement (NBCWA).
The contract, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 2008, when the current agreement expires, brings workers there into line with the national agreement, with a few minor, non-concessionary differences. However, the miners, who had been working under a Memorandum of Understanding since 2001, will receive an immediate $1,000 bonus and a $2 boost in their pay rate.
When the full provisions of the agreement go into effect at the beginning of next year, UMWA L.U. 1793 will be working at the same rates and under the same basic provisions of the NBCWA as all other UMWA-represented Peabody miners.
"It was extremely important to bring this unit under the same national agreement, and now all Peabody union employees will be working, literally, off the same page," said UMWA International Secretary-Treasurer Dan Kane.
