United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

"The entire United Mine Workers of America family mourns the passing of Erma Ora James Byrd, the wife of Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia. Mrs. Byrd's devotion to her husband and the people he served in West Virginia is a shining example of love and graciousness that few will ever match.

"Mrs. Byrd was one of our own, the daughter of a coal miner who very clearly understood the nature of the work coal miners do as well the lives our families lead. She knew what it was like to live in a coal camp, knew the joys and sorrows that are visited on mining families. I've often said that coal miners have no better friend than Senator Byrd. He had no better friend than Erma Ora Byrd, and we grieve with him today."
