UMWA W. Va. COMPAC announces 2014 primary endorsements
March 10, 2014
For immediate release?:
[CHARLESTON, W. VA.] The West Virginia State Council of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) Coal Miner’s Political Action Committee (COMPAC) voted last Friday to endorse 97 candidates in the state’s May 13, 2014 primary election.
Included in those endorsements is a recommendation that the UMWA’s National Council of COMPAC endorse Rep. Nick Rahall (D), in the state’s 3rd Congressional District. Under the UMWA Constitution, only the National Council can endorse candidates for federal office.
“This is the culmination of the union’s democratic endorsement process for the primary election in West Virginia,” UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said. “The process starts with our local union COMPAC Committees, then goes to the state level, then to the national level for federal candidates.
“The UMWA respects that decisions about who to vote for are personal ones,” Roberts said. “We also think that workers need to know which candidates the union believes will be on their side once in office. That’s what this list represents.”
After the results of the primary election are in, the state council will meet once again to make endorsements for November’s general election.
