The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) was certified today by the Alberta Labor Relations Board as the collective bargaining representative for more than 320 coal miners at Grande Cache Coal Corp. in Grande Cache, Alberta.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome these miners into the UMWA family,” UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts said today. “Their courageous struggle to organize the UMWA at their mine is an inspiration to all our members, both in Canada and the United States. We look forward to sitting down with the company to negotiate a fair and equitable collective agreement as soon as possible.”

Miners at Grande Cache voted last week in favor of the union by a 140-96 vote. The Grande Cache mine has both underground and surface operations, as well as a preparation plant where coal is cleaned prior to shipment.

The UMWA represents 105,000 active and retired coal miners, manufacturing workers, public service employees, health care workers and professional employees in Canada and the United States. Headquartered in Fairfax, Va., the UMWA represents more coal miners than any other union in the world.
