UMWA grieves at loss of miner in Alabama

April 11, 2006

United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

"The hearts and prayers of all United Mine Workers of America members and our families go out to the family of our brother, Garry Jones, who died yesterday as a result of injuries received in a roofall accident that occurred on March 29 at the Jim Walters Resources #4 mine in Brookwood, Ala.

"Brother Jones was a member of UMWA Local Union 2245 with 27 years of service at the time of the accident. Our safety investigators are working with federal and state accident investigators to determine the cause of this accident, and we will participate fully in the investigation.

"Brother Jones is now the 24th miner to die as a result of on-the-job accidents in the United States this year. It is imperative for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration and Congress to stop accepting the status quo in the nation's mines. Miners are dying, and more will die without swift action from those in our government who are charged with protecting them."
